Hawaii’s monarchy was overthrown On Jan. 17, 1893, when Queen Lili’uokalani was forced to abdicate her power. Two years later, the coup led to the dissolving of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i and its annexation as a U.S. territory. Later it was admitted as the 50th state.
